Sometimes, I feel like it’s a great thing to go into something without a lot of expectations, just because you don’t really get disappointed… although, had I expected a lot from Chicago, I still would have been blown away. Like I said in a couple of past posts, I’ve only been to Chicago once before. When I was 4. So this was a whole new experience for me! And I kind of really wonder why not a lot of people talk about Chicago. It’s like a more laid-back New York. I love it so much.
Stuff We Did and Stuff that was Awesome, listed down for Posterity, my future child:
- We ate RPM for my birthday dinner, yay.
- The Field Museum
- We watched the Beach Fossils at Bottom Lounge and it was so full of children, it made me feel old.
- We spent the day at the Shedd Aquarium and the Art Institute for the Magritte exhibit, which didn’t allow photos.
- We went to the Museum of Contemporary Art for the David Bowie exhibit, which was, as expected, beautiful beyond measure.
- We met up with Tita Rose, my Tita Sarah’s sister-in-law by the Navy Pier.
- Walking past the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot cover everyday on the way home.
- So much public art!

Museum of Contemporary Art
I loveloveloved the David Bowie Is exhibit. It’s not an art show in the strictest sense, but it was nice to see Bowie celebrated, documented, and presented this way. The ticket is a bit expensive at about $25 each (if I remember correctly), but you get a real great experience of the breadth of Bowie’s work as well as a history lesson c/o a free audio tour. Photographs weren’t allowed, so here are some photos of how they dressed up the rest of the museum.

The sculpture on the right is by Jaume Plensa and is actually part of the sculptures in Millennium Park.
Beach Fossils
Beach Fossils played with Heavenly Beat and Axxa/Abraxas at Bottom Lounge on the 2nd night we were there. I’m not really an “updated” listener but it was nice to see them play anyway.
The Bean
The Bean is actually called Cloud Gate and it’s by an artist called Anish Kapoor.

Ahh, I super miss it already. I’m so glad we went, even if I was initially ambivalent towards this leg of our trip. I’m glad to have spent my birthday there, too!
