ALL I EVER WANTED WAS AN APARTMENT STORY.
In a few days, I’ll be watching The National play in Singapore. I was supposed to see them in March, but they postponed the show to November. Which turned out to be pretty okay, because I can make all the “Mr. November” jokes I want.
Here’s a sampler of songs, which was difficult to pare down to these sixteen songs. First of all, I am a huge fan of The National. I might as well have uploaded their entire discography, if not for some moral faculties that are still in check. Secondly, I found The National after they had already released Boxer, so I didn’t get to bond with the earlier albums, except for Alligator, which ended up being my favorite.
Anyway—these songs. These are a couple of my favorites. Some of these, they don’t even play live all that often, but I wish they would (cough, “All the Wine,” cough). I hope you enjoy. It’s far from comprehensive, but I’d like to think it’s a pretty good list.
Matt Berninger’s voice takes a bit of time to get used to, but once you do, it’s difficult to imagine listening to anything else.

I have also maximized all the “Mr. November” jokes I can think of in the past few months. Ha ha. Great list, Carina. Actually, you can throw in all the songs from Alligator, Boxer, and High Violet, and it would still be a wonderful mix tape. I hope they play “Abel,” though. It’s one of my favorites. I miss that time when Matt used to growl like he’s doing something wild in bed. Lol. See you! I’ll be that kiddo crying at your back. Vanderlyle cry beybeh cry!

Although, I agree, reshuffling with other songs would still make for an excellent mix. Which songs not in that triumvirate do you enjoy? I like Cold Girl Fever, and a bunch of alternate versions + About Today etc etc… Actually, lahat nalang siguro.
I was going to download the mix, but then I realized I have all their albums, so I just recreated the tracklist as a playlist. HAHA.
Slow Show is such a sexy song.
Will you be writing about the concert? I’m excited to read about your feelings re: seeing the National live. :D

Any mix with The National in it is a winner.
I have all their albums except the first one. ‘Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers,’ besides having the most awesome title ever, is a good album too, especially the song “Slipping Husband.”
I think Matt Berninger is the most fascinating lyricist of our time. When I tell friends about The National, I compare getting into them to learning to drink coffee. It’s an adult, acrid, bitter taste at first. And then soon, you can’t get through your day without it.

Yup, I have given a listen to “Sad Songs” a listen, but it hasn’t quite gripped me the same way as the other releases, I think.
That’s a great analogy! Ugh, he is so good. Even when he writes silly things, it just has a different impact because their sound is the opposite of silly, and his voice is so rich.
