It’s November again! You should know what this means.
So, I gave in. I’ve joined the National Novel Writing Month three times, and I have not won once. (Ambition and lazy-assery is a lethal combination. These are two qualities I currently possess.) I’d previously attempted to stretch a story into a novella, reaching up to about 3,000 or so words. Previous attempts only produced scribblings written half-heartedly on Post-its and paper surfaces I could find.
Not to jump the bullet (is that even the correct phrase? I can’t think straight because I am watching Dead Like Me and someone is suddenly talking to me.) but I have a very good feeling that I will go much, much farther (further?) this year. I’m working on a young adult something, I still haven’t worked out the kinks, to be honest.
I wasn’t even thinking of doing NaNoWriMo this year, mostly because I forgot about it. But my good friend, Chris (her NaNo profile) reminded me about it. So, I’m throwing all caution to the wind, and just write. I think I probably missed the point the past few times I decided to join NaNoWriMo. Not going to be doing all that editing shiitake until after November 30th.
In case you are wondering, here is my NaNoWriMo profile. Add me as a buddy, if you’d like. I’d like that very much.
I was going to add a word count widget, but life wouldn’t let me, so here are some useful links, instead, in case you are doing NaNoWriMo this year, too. Or if you’re a writer and want some help or inspiration:
- 2009 Pep Talks
- Pep Talks from over the years
- Forums — very helpful for support, and for when you are stuck in a rut
- NaNoWriMo’s Flickr Group — just pretty things to look through, posted by other participants this year
So, that’s it. Good luck to everyone else who’s doing it. Feel free to let me know how you are doing in the comments. :)

Good luck with it Carina! I’m planning on doing it as well, only once Nov 11th has passed (meaning after my last exam), so then I’ll knuckle down. Even though I’m expecting to only make it to 25K at the very most with that timing.
Last year I made it, just, to 50K and when it came to revising, everything went to the bin. Oh well. I had some good fun.
MARTAAAA. Nice to see you here. :) I wish you luck (both on NaNo and your exams). I actually have my thesis to write as well, though I guess you can see where my priorities lie.
At least you were able to reach the mark! That is amazing! What was it about?
I was attempting to write Lit fic before, but then it was really hard to stretch, so I’m trying my hand at YA fiction now. I figure my main character could be way introspective, even though things don’t really happen to her.
:) I’m usually popping in to see what you write, even though I’m evasive when it comes to actually commenting.
My story was a YA fantasy/steampunk about a girl who has to run away after discovering she’s a “Frankenstein”, a creation of a witch, and how to live with it surrounded b society’s judgments. Meant to be philosophical on life and death, ended up being quite crummy. I don’t think I was a good enough writer to handle the topic, sad to say! :(
Good luck, again, with yours. Post up your work sometime, I would love to read it.
I’m super psyched! Good luck, we can do this!! If you need an outlet or an instant peptalk, you know who to YM. ;)
Marta, that’s nice. I really appreciate it. :) Do you update elsewhere? I was pretty sad when you took down that LJ comm you used to review stuff. That sounds like such an interesting story, though! I would read it. Maybe you can give it another shot some time. :) I’m definitely considering posting stuff up on here. It’s pretty bare, yeah?
Chris, awesome! Feel free to send me an e-mail or something (the Gmail one!) because I’m not really on YM a lot these days.
I definitely don’t think I’ll win because I have SO much to do this month, but I think it’s true what they say–”Want something to get done? Give it to someone who already has too much to do.”
But yes, I think I’ll end up writing way more than I would have otherwise, having this goal. I’d really like to win this year, of course. We’ll see how it goes. So far I’ve only written about 400 words, but NaNo’s only been on for 12 hours in my timezone and that was just a little something I typed at at midnight.
Good luck with yours. :D I just added you as a writing buddy–I’m pumpkincarriage. I’m writing YA something as well.
Donna, I’ve added you as a NaNo buddy. Thank you for stopping by! I think we can do a huge chunk of writing, if anything. :) I haven’t written decent fiction in about two years now. It’s pretty scary.
Good luck with yours as well. I’ve added you back, but there’s something wrong with my NaNoWriMo profile because the ones I’ve added recently don’t show up.
By the way, I went to your website and you’re pretty funny, so I’ve added your blog to my feeds. :D
