Yet another confused mix from me to you. These are a lot of songs I listened to, leading up to August. It’s really confused, but. You know, I’m a little confused as a person, so it’s not all that surprising, I guess.
LISTEN: Spotify
I don’t have time to upload a zip file of the songs, but let me know if you need help looking for some of the songs.
And now, click the cut to see me attempt to ramble about Jason Derulo and HAIM, hahaha
— Run Away With Me by Carly Rae Jepsen
You’re stuck in my head, stuck on my heart, stuck on my body, body
This is the opening track of Carly Rae Jepsen’s EMOTION, which is such a great opening song, I ended up sticking it at the beginning of this mix. It’s pretty much a perfect song, and I’m pretty lost as to why she released “I Really Like You” as the first single instead of this one.
— How it Ended by The Drums
And I could write a thousand more songs about you
Before this one’s done, the next one’s begun
I don’t know, I was very much into a The Drums mood, and this one was the one I clung to the most. If you haven’t heard it yet… well, it’s a very upbeat but soothing, nostalgia-ridden platonic-ish love song. In my humble opinion. It’s sweet and angsty, which is my favorite combination of feelings, it turns out.
— 20/20 by The Vaccines
Cause I’m through thinking ’bout you
Another BBC Radio1 influence, I guess. It’s a nice fun song that sounds like it would fit right in, set against a montage of mischief or like a montage of getting-over-little-shits-who-break-my-heart. Like you’re pulling yourself back up together after a breakup or something.
— Black Magic by Little Mix
For a spell that can’t be broken, one drop should be enough.
My bitter-ass Ziam self took a while to warm up to Little Mix, but I do actually like a couple of songs. This one is a pretty good one, even though I’ve overplayed it by this point, I think. It’s a fun pop song with a pretty weird video, lol. Still worth hearing at least once, I think.
— Want to Want Me by Jason Derulo
Girl, you’re the one I want to want me, and if you want me, girl, you got me
Now, this, I’ve been listening for the past two months, maybe. And I’m still not sick of it. And I’m not even embarrassed anymore because it’s really quite good and catchy and it’s got a great beat and rhythm. Which I obviously know a lot about. If you don’t know who Jason Derulo is, he’s the guy responsible for “Wiggle” and “Talk Dirty to Me,” lol.
— Happily by One Direction
And if he feels my traces in your hair, I’m sorry, love, but I don’t really care
AHA! One Direction finally makes an appearance. Don’t worry, I’m still working on that starter mix. I just. Want to get it right. Yeah. Anyway, this song, I love so you get this one first. I think Harry co-wrote it. I love the guitarrrr, and Harry’s voice, and basically the whole song. You’ll love it, I promise. This is one of those surprise-attack 1D songs, like: “Wow, this is a nice song! Who’s it by?” “One Direction!”
— Forever by HAIM
So come on baby, tigger the sound, let’s figure it out,
Let’s get back to where we started out.
This is the first HAIM song I heard that I liked? Also c/o BBC Radio1. I know it’s old, but I don’t care! It’s really good. I love the beat so much. Anyway, it’s so good. I didn’t even realize that it was angsty, but of course it is… I concede that HAIM’s pretty good, at least for this song. Please comment with your fave HAIM song so I can listen to more.
— Pony by Ginuwine
You’ll be on my jockey team
I mean. I mostly blame Magic Mike XXL and Marga Buenaventura.
— A Long Walk by Jill Scott
Let’s take a long walk around the park after dark
This is a very slow and pretty sensible (haha) song about getting to know someone. My BFF rec’d it to me when I was shopping around for RnB recommendations on Twitter.
— Never Ever by All Saints
Never ever have I ever felt so low
When you gonna take me out of this black hole?
OKAY, so I’ve been obsessed with the idea of Zayn doing a cover of this song. With the speaking parts done by Harry or something. Ugh. Can you imagine that chorus being sung by Zayn. I might actually cry. Like for 10 years.
— Without by Years & Years
And everything falls apart when I try to say
This one’s a bit different from the Years & Years song I put in the last mix. Mainly, this one’s sadder, haha. But still a good song.
— 405 by Death Cab for Cutie
You keep twisting the truth that keeps me thrown askew
An old fave that I’ve been listening to a lot. It’s one of the lyrically sparse DCFC songs, which I tend to like (i.e. “Coney Island,” “Transatlanticism”), where a lot of the affection I feel for them doesn’t necessarily come from the words but like, from the feelings that the song ends up creating. IF THAT MAKES SENSE.
— Weathered by Jack Garratt
When I grow old, I’ll drink as smoke, but just as long as you stay, you stay
I found a way out
Another angsty number that I’ve fallen head over heels in love with. It’s a quietly sad song and it was the first song on the mix I decided on keeping for August.
And I’m out! Sorry this was all over the place?! But I hope you find a song you like? x
